  • Traditional annual visits are leaving women without answers.

  • A more comprehensive approach improves both the patient experience and outcomes.
Early results show 87% of women said all or most of their concerns were addressed, 9 in 10 would return to Visana, and Visana's value-based care model has demonstrated an average reduction of $3,429 in total cost of care per patient over six months through earlier intervention and coordinated care.

Visana Health, a virtual 50-state medical group for women, today announced that it has redesigned its annual well-woman visit around a simple idea: women shouldn’t have to choose between a free preventive visit and getting answers to the symptoms affecting their health today. The Complete Women’s Health Visit from Visana combines preventive care, symptom evaluation, and expertise across gynecology, primary care, and endocrinology to help women get answers sooner and leave with a personalized, evidence-based care plan based on their individual health goals.

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), most women are entitled to one fully covered annual wellness visit with no copay or deductible. However, most of the time, these visits address a defined set of preventive services and routine health screenings, such as cervical cancer screening, breast exams, and STI testing, and leave little time for women to raise new symptoms, ongoing concerns, or questions about their broader health. Too often, when women do bring up those concerns during a preventive visit, they are asked to schedule a follow-up appointment or see a specialist. This disconnected care experience results in care delays, fragmented and sometimes conflicting treatment plans, and unexpected out-of-pocket costs.

“For decades, the well woman visit has remained largely unchanged, focusing on preventive screenings, such as cervical and breast cancer, without enough time to consider other factors influencing health,” said Barbara Levy, MD, FACOG, FACS, MSCP, Chief Medical Officer at Visana Health. “While these screenings remain critically important, we know that a woman’s long-term health is shaped by much more, including her cardiovascular and metabolic health, hormones, sleep, mental well-being, nutrition, family history, and personal risk factors. The Complete Women’s Health Visit was designed to close that gap by giving women the time, expertise, and personalized care they need to better understand their health today and reduce their risk for future disease.”

Key elements of the Complete Women’s HealthVisit from Visana include:

    1. More Time  with a Women’s Health Specialist: Visana patients receive up to 45 minutes with a provider to discuss symptoms, health  concerns, preventive care, and personal health goals.
    2. A Comprehensive Review of Seven Key Areas of Women’s Health: A whole-person evaluation that goes beyond a pap smear and  mammogram to assess hormonal, metabolic, cardiovascular, reproductive, sexual and emotional well-being, helping connect symptoms that are often  evaluated and treated separately.
    3. Advanced Labs and Follow Up Care Personalized to Each Patient: Visana providers recommend clinically appropriate labs and screenings based on each woman’s health goals, symptoms, medical and family history, and individual risk factors—not a one-size-fits-all approach. Depending on a patient’s needs, advanced labs may include comprehensive thyroid testing, a cardiometabolic panel, a lipids panel, vitamin D, baseline insulin, and other advanced diagnostics. This approach helps providers look beyond “everything is normal” to better understand the underlying causes of her symptoms, identify chronic conditions earlier, and recommend the most appropriate next steps.

The need for a different approach is reinforced by new data2 from Visana, which suggests many women are left searching for answers after their annual visit. Among non-Visana patients, 62% say they turn to Google for health questions their provider didn’t answer, while 21% report using ChatGPT. At the same time, concerns about surprise costs may be discouraging women from speaking up: 32% have received an unexpected medical bill after bringing up a health concern following an annual visit, and one in six avoid discussing certain symptoms because they fear additional charges.

By creating space to address both preventive care and the symptoms women bring to their visit, clinicians can identify complex conditions earlier, reduce unnecessary referrals and repeat appointments, and provide a more coordinated care experience. Among women who completed a Complete Women’s Health Visit during the initial rollout, 87%1said all or most of their concerns were addressed, and 9 in 10 said they would return to Visana for future care.

Earlier identification and coordinated management of these conditions doesn’t just improve the patient experience—it also improves clinical and financial outcomes. Visana’s value-based care model has demonstrated average savings of $3,429 per patient within six months through earlier intervention, coordinated specialty care, and improved management of complex women’s health conditions.
